Kiefer Sutherland's anecdote about Shane MacGowan proves what a legend he was
Following the tragic passing of Shane MacGown, an old video has resurfaced of Kiefer Sutherland telling the story of the time they met - and had a disagreement. The duo had gotten into a physical fight at a party, before three hours later, MacGowan somehow ended up in Sutherland's hotel room, sleeping on the couch. When the actor woke up, the Pogues singer had written him a 'beautiful' letter - which Sutherland has kept to this day. "Don't judge a book by its cover and very rarely trust first encounters", he said of what he'd learnt from MacGowan. Sign up to our new free Indy100 weekly newsletter

Dolly Parton has a surprising connection to Keanu Reeves
Dolly Parton has spoken about her surprising connection to none other than Keanu Reeves. The legendary singer made history as the first female country artist to appear on the cover of Playboy in 1978 where she wore the iconic black bustier, bow tie and bunny ears. In a recent appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, Dolly revealed the costume was actually made by Keanu Reeves's mother costume designer Patricia Taylor. And so Dolly has some memories of little Keanu who would tag along with his mum at work. “She did a lot of sewing for me. She did a lot of my clothes,” Dolly said. “I remember Keanu when he was just little, and she would bring him over to my house when we were fitting or when I would go to the shop where she worked.” Years later, Keanu Reeves would become a household name known for films such as Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Point Break, The Matrix, and John Wick and paid a visit backstage to one of Dolly's shows where he asked if she remembered him. “He said, ’Do you remember me? I’m the little boy that used to sit at your feet when my mum was [working],’” she recalled. “Of course I knew he had become a star. But it didn’t connect to me that that was who that was.” Keanu himself has spoken about his mum's working with Dolly when he appeared on Red Table Talk in 2021 where he confessed to wearing the Playboy outfit as a Halloween costume one (unspecified) year. “I put on the ears and the bustier,” he said. “I wore sneakers with fishnet stockings and the bowtie. I had some pretty long hair, and I was Dolly Parton as a Playboy Bunny.” Drew Barrymore told Dolly about Keanu’s Halloween costume, which she sounded pretty chuffed about. “Aw, that’s sweet,” she said. “He’s great. He’s the sweetest guy.” How to join the indy100's free WhatsApp channel Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Have your say in our news democracy. Weird Al shares shockingly low amount he makes from Spotify Wrapped
Satirical artist Weird Al has shared just how little musicians are making from Spotify - even if they're in your Wrapped's top five artists. Users received personal 'thank you' video messages from artists if they made it into their top five list, however, Weird Al used the opportunity to remind everyone that the streams don't equal cash. “It’s my understanding that I had over 80 million streams on Spotify this year, so, if I’m doing the math right that means I earned… $12", he told fans, adding he'd be using the money to buy a sandwich. Kris Jenner 'really hurt' by Kourtney Kardashian's public baby announcement
Kris Jenner has opened up about her feelings towards Kourtney Kardashian's pregnancy announcement at Travis Barker's Blink 182 concert. Earlier this year, Kourtney made headlines for holding a sign reading 'Travis I'm Pregnant!' during his Los Angeles gig. In the finale of The Kardashians, Kris was asked whether she "enjoyed" the big reveal, to which she said "yeah". It was then that Khloe jumped in and shared that her mother had seen it on the news. The momager went on to explain the situation, saying: "We'd left the TV on the night before and woke up very early in the morning to see Kourtney holding the sign. I thought I was being punked - I was like did somebody put this up? - and then I saw it was ABC News." While Kris acknowledged she knew her daughter was pregnant, she did not expect her to announce it at the concert. Khloe claimed Kris' feelings were "really hurt," but Kourtney simply said she "forgot". "She forgot she had a family," Kris said. "That's what pregnancy brain does, it's truly wild how that happens." In another snippet, Kourtney gave her side of the story, adding: "I just truly didn't think to invite them to the LA concert and didn't think they would care to come. I did tell Khloé about it and she asked me to change it to San Diego. "[...] It's not about you. It was truly just our way to tell the world. It was about me and Travis, not about anything else." The Pogues' brutal putdown of Laurence Fox called one of Shane MacGowan's 'finest works'
The Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan died “peacefully” on the morning of November 30 with his wife Victoria and family at his side. A statement shared on behalf of his wife, Victoria Mary Clarke, his sister Siobhan and father, Maurice, on The Pogues’ official Instagram said: “It is with the deepest sorrow and heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of SHANE MACGOWAN. “Shane died peacefully at 3am this morning (30 November, 2023) with his wife Victoria and family by his side. Prayers and the last rites were read which gave comfort to his family. “He is survived by his wife Victoria, his sister Siobhan and his father, Maurice, family and a large circle of friends. Further details will be announced shortly but the family ask for privacy at this very sad time”. Irish President Michael D Higgins said there was “particular poignancy” that the death of Shane MacGowan had followed closely that of Sinead O’Connor. He said: “Born on Christmas Day, there was perhaps some form of destiny which led Shane to writing Fairytale Of New York, the timeless quality of which will surely mean that it will be listened to every Christmas for the next century or more. “Likewise songs like Rainy Night In Soho, A Pair Of Brown Eyes, If I Should Fall From Grace With God and so many others will live on far into the years and decades to come. “I think too of Haunted, and the particular poignancy that both Shane and Sinead O’Connor have left us in such quick succession.” He added: “It was a great honour for me, as President of Ireland, to present Shane with a lifetime achievement award in the National Concert Hall in January 2018 as we marked his 60th birthday. A richly deserved honour.” Amongst those paying tribute include Nick Cave, Micheal Martin and Leo Varadkar. One person unlikely to pay tribute is the outspoken actor and commentator Laurence Fox who was once called a 'herronvolk sh**e' by The Pogues Twitter/X account after he complained about the BBC censoring a version of 'Fairytale of New York.' Although Fox has since removed his tweet, the Pogues putdown is still live, leading many to reshare it in memory of MacGowan. Additional reporting by PA. Jeremy Vine's latest on-air gaffe is textbook Alan Partridge
Radio presenter Jeremy Vine has given listeners perhaps the most quintessentially “Alan Partridge” moment when reading out a surprisingly morbid story on his BBC Radio 2 show. Vine, 58, was telling a tale about an eight-year-old who was boating with their family on the River Hull live on his show. While reading up to the point when the writer’s 12-year-old brother took control of the boat and drove it into a bridge, he started laughing. “I don’t know why I’m laughing,” he said. The contents of the letter, however, were about to get extremely dark. Vine, reading out the story, said: "When I was eight, my parents had a boat on the River Hull, one day it rained and the river rose, my parents let my 12-year-old brother drive the boat. “We were sunbathing on deck, I went to get a drink just as the galley caved in, because what he'd done is accelerated..." Chuckling, Vine continued: "...into Tickton Bridge... I don't know why I'm laughing....okay, this is not good. "The collision took my mum's arm off...blimey O'Riley... I didn't see that coming.” The listener wrote that they would have been "decapitated" if they had still been on the boat's deck. Jeremy ended with: "Okay...well that's slightly lowered the mood." Sharing the post on social media, one listener said: “Purest Alan Partridge moment from Vine, here. Gold.” Vine responded: "I can only apologise." Oops.
