LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: In response to a viral movie segment showing Jackie Chan acting like a devoted father, the veteran actor was criticized online for abandoning his real-life lesbian daughter Etta Ng Chok Lam. An emotive sequence from the 69-year-old Hong Kong-born actor's most recent movie 'Ride On' was featured in the controversy. As information about the 'Rush Hour' actor's fractured relationship with his real-life daughter came to light, fans' opinions about Jackie changed from the initial heartfelt response to harsh criticism, as per Daily Mail.
Etta Ng (Xiao Long Nu), Jackie Chan's real-life daughter, made news in 2018 when she claimed that she and her girlfriend were experiencing homelessness because of their "homophobic" parents. Etta is the real-life daughter of the action hero and former beauty queen Elaine Ng Yi-Lei. When promoting his film 'Police Story' in an interview in 2013, Jackie openly said that he had been an unkind father in the past.
Who is Etta Ng Chok Lam's mother?
Etta Ng Chok Lam is widely recognized as the child of renowned martial artist and actor Jackie Chan. She was born in Hong Kong, and her mother is former beauty queen Elaine Ng Yi-Lei.
Elaine Ng Yi-Lei was born in Hong Kong on September 23, 1972. She is also known by the name Elaine Wu. She won Miss Asia 1990 and works as an actress. She became recognized for her romance with actor Jackie Chan. Elaine is also well-known for her work in the films 'Call Girl '92' (1992), 'Dian zhi bing bing zhi: Qing nian gan tan', and 'Na you yi tian bu xiang ni' (1995).
In 1999, Elaine made her pregnancy announcement and, in response to rumors, revealed her relationship with Jackie. The 'Rush Hour' actor eventually came clean about having an affair with her. On January 18, 1999, she gave birth to their daughter named Etta Ng Chok Lam. Elaine, however, made the decision to raise her child alone, without Jackie Chan.
It appears that the mother and daughter are no longer close. Elaine has experienced her own controversy as well. According to a 2015 article by Jayne Stars, she had previously been criticized for being a "bad parent" because of her drinking habits, an allegation for which she publicly apologized. "I admitted I was wrong in one aspect as a mother – not giving her [Etta] a sense of security. But she knows I love her," Elaine said at the time.
What happened between Jackie Chan and Elaine Ng?
In 1982, Jackie married Taiwanese actress Joan Lin, to whom he has been married for 40 years. However, it came to light in 1999 that he had a relationship with Elaine, who was 19 years younger than the actor. When Jackie learned Elaine was pregnant, he reportedly ceased interacting with her. He later expressed regret in his memoir, 'Never Grow Up,' claiming that he had "screwed up royally."
According to reports, Etta didn't grow up knowing her father and never adopted his last name. Etta has openly criticized her famous parents throughout the years on her social media platforms. Jackie is estimated to be worth $400 million, although it is not known whether he financially supports the Ngs.
Etta came out as lesbian in a 2017 Instagram post. In a YouTube video with her potential bride Andi Autumn in April 2018, Etta claimed that her "homophobic parents" had rejected her and that she had been battling homelessness while living with her girlfriend.
'Elaine is the one who disowned Etta'
The recently released emotional clip from Jackie's new movie 'Ride On' raised a storm among online fans, who criticized the actor and his illicit partner Elaine for abandoning their only daughter because of her sexual orientation. One fan took to Twitter and wrote, "Elaine Ng Yi-lei, her mother, specifically stated she would raise her daughter without Jackie Chan. And Elaine is the one who disowned Etta for being gay. I’m not here to justify his lack of involvement in her life, but don’t get it twisted." Another tweeted, "That's not his daughter. Also his actual daughter, Etta Ng Chok Lam, was the result of an affair he had with Hong Kong actress Elaine Ng Yi-lei. He was never a part of her life." A third wrote, "This isn't true. The girl's Chan's 'illegitimate' daughter. She was raised by her single mother (actress, Elaine Ng Yi-Lei). When she said they (she & her partner) had homophobic parents, she was actually talking about her mother and her partner's. She's never lived with Chan."
Another comment read, "This is not his REAL daughter. This is Liu Haocun, his on screen daughter from Ride On. From what I can ascertain, he has no relationship with his biological daughter. After an extra martial affair with her mother, Elaine Ng Yi-Lei, he cut all ties." Someone else claimed, "Jackie chan disowned his daughter for being gay." A user added, "Jackie Chan is trending for a "wholesome moment with his daughter." His daughter is Etta Ng, who he disowned for being gay. The woman he's having "a moment" with in that video is an actor named Liu Haocun. This is Etta Ng Chok Lam."
