Nearly seven months on from Adidas parting ways with rapper Kanye West, and the sportswear brand reportedly still has $1.3 billion of unsold Yeezy stock in its warehouses. The decision from Adidas to split from West - otherwise known as Ye - came back in October last year came after the 45-year-old made antisemitic remarks both in interviews and online. But now, Adidas has to decide what to do with the remaining stock of the popular shoe as the company attempts to turn its fortune around after it abruptly ended its partnership with West and his Yeezy brand, with 400 million euros ($441 million) in lost sales at the start of the year. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Though Adidas is "getting closer and closer to making a decision" on what to do with the sneakers and the “options are narrowing,” new CEO Bjorn Gulden said, as per Associated Press. He became in charge back in January this year, three months after Adidas terminated it's partnership with Ye. However, a decision has not yet been reached due to "so many interested parties," he added. Gulden did not confirm whether the option to destroy the shoes had been ruled out but noted that this is something it is the company is "trying to avoid." Meanwhile other options have their own downsides, since selling the shoes would mean Ye would need to be paid royalties, removing brand identification would be dishonest. Giving the shoes away for free sounds like a nice idea in theory but this could cause them to be resold at a higher market price. Gulden is also remaining tight-lipped on the exact quantity of stock that is left since he believes if consumer are aware of this number it "could have an impact on demand," as per AP. The CEO admitted losing Yeezy is "of course hurting us" and if Adidas decides not to sell the remaining shoes, it could reduce earnings by 500 million euros this year. Net sales declined 1 per cent in the first quarter, to 5.27 billion euros, and would have risen per cent with the Yeezy line, the company said. As a whole, Gulden described 2023 as a "a year of transition" with "a better ’24 and a good ’25" as the German sportswear business continues without the Yeezy brand. Elsewhere, Adidas found itself being sued by investors last week who allege the company knew about Ye’s offensive remarks and harmful behaviour years before the termination and failed to take precautionary measures to limit financial losses. YouTuber MrBeast is being counter-sued for $100 million by Virtual Dining Concepts, the company behind Beast Burger restaurants. MrBeast, whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson, shared in June that he was going to be “moving on” from his Beast Burger restaurants in order to concentrate more on his snack business with his chocolate bar brand Feastables. Just over two years ago Donaldson partnered with Virtual Dining Concepts (VDC) to launch over 2,000 ‘ghost kitchens’ to make Beast Burger available across the United States. VDC are suing Donaldson for failing to honour his contractual obligations, as well as intentional tortious interference. The lawsuit was filed on Monday morning in the Supreme Court of the State of New York for the County of New York. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter The suit, obtained by Variety, is a response to Donaldson suing VDC and its parent company last month, wanting to terminate the deal for his restaurant chain, alleging the burgers it served were called “disgusting,” “revolting” and “inedible” which damaged his reputation. Last week, VDC hit back at the suit claiming it was “riddled with false statements and inaccuracies”, as well as calling it “meritless” and “ill-advised”. “This case is about a social media celebrity who believes his fame means that his word does not matter, that the facts do not matter, and that he can renege and breach his contractual obligations without consequence,” the suit states. “He is mistaken.” The counter-suit claims that Donaldson had breached the parties’ agreements and interfered with business dealings. As a result, it has damaged the reputation of MrBeast Burger and VDC, turned away customers and ruined relationships with suppliers and vendors. The lawsuit also contains examples of deleted tweets from the YouTube star’s account where he writes that he wished to close the burger business, writing: “the company I partnered with won’t let me stop even though it’s terrible for my brand.” VDC was co-founded by Robert Earl, who is the founder and CEO of Planet Hollywood. Findings of a study have revealed that the majority of women think it’s a turn-off if their significant other listens to Joe Rogan’s podcast. Rogan has come under fire in the past after making some controversial comments on his Spotify podcast The Joe Rogan Experience. The outspoken host has previously been accused of spreading misinformation about the Covid-19 vaccine and making anti-semitic comments. Despite this, Rogan’s podcast is extremely popular with reports suggesting that each episode draws an audience of 11 million. But, for his fans, it’s not all good news as a study has found that the majority of women think it’s a “'turn-off” if their partner is a listener. More than 1,000 people between the ages of 18 to 34 were interviewed by Change Research, who found that 55 per cent of women felt it was a big “red flag” if someone listens to The Joe Rogan Experience. In contrast, 35 per cent of men found it a red flag if their partner likes to listen to the podcaster. The interview also asked participants about other red flags when it comes to relationships, throwing up some interesting gender-based trends. The study found more than 75 per cent of women thought it would be a dealbreaker if their partner was a MAGA supporter. On the other hand, for men it was 59 per cent. It was also revealed that a partner not having a hobby was a problem for women more than it was for men – 66 per cent, compared with 60 per cent. In fact, for men, the biggest red flag for them was if their partner said they were a “communist”, with 64 per cent seeing that as an issue.
