LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: As a "Barbie dad," Ryan Gosling opened up about his struggles trying to keep up with his two daughters's dolls because of their "complicated backstories." The 42-year-old 'Barbie' actor revealed to ET Canada on the pink carpet on King Street West on June 29 how he and his daughters Esmeralda, 8, and Amada, 7, enjoy playing with Barbies. The 'Barbie' star put up a stylish performance while attending a press conference in Toronto, wearing a blue suit, as per Daily Mail.
According to Variety, Gosling and Margot Robbie received equal compensation for their roles as Ken and Barbie in the film. Greta Gerwig's 'Barbie' is set to hit theatres on July 21. 'Barbie' is one of the most eagerly anticipated movies to be out in 2023.
'They all have their own names, very complicated lives'
When asked whether he was a "good Barbie dad" and if he could role-play with the dolls, the 'The Notebook' actor responded, "Well, you have to know because my kids, their Barbies aren’t even named Barbie." He said, "They all have their own names, very complicated lives, backstories, interrelationships, history. Yeah. you gotta know it all."
The Golden Globe winner then gave an example, explaining that if he started playing with dolls that were "estranged now" but wasn't aware, then "they don't even talk." Gosling, who plays the role of Ken in the live-action film, then said about his daughters's Ken doll, "And by the way, he works at a grocery store, okay? He’s not a fireman."
'This guy’s story does need to be told'
The 'La La Land' actor added that he was inspired to take on the role in Greta Gerwig's film by his daughter's Barbie dolls, particularly Ken. Gosling recounted during an interview with GQ, "I did see him, like, face down in the mud outside one day, next to a squished lemon… and it was like, 'This guy’s story does need to be told', you know?"
Press events are in full force to promote the Greta Gerwig-directed 'Barbie' movie, which is set to hit theaters on July 21. The plot of the $100 million film involves Barbie and Ken as they venture into the outside world in search of the real meaning of happiness.
