LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: A freshly released 911 call has revealed the gravity of the terrifying moments when Bronny James suffered a cardiac arrest during a basketball practice on Monday, July 24. The 18-year-old son of NBA superstar LeBron James was rushed to a hospital in Los Angeles after he collapsed during team basketball practice at the University of Southern California.
Following James’ discharge on Thursday, July 27, an audio clip of the 911 emergency call, reported by TMZ, revealed how USC practice staff begged for an ambulance after the incident happened. The frantic call for help was made at 9:26 am when James showed signs of cardiac arrest. “We need an ambulance — immediately,” the caller can be heard telling the 911 dispatcher. “Listen, listen, listen, get an ambulance here now,” they continued. When the dispatcher asked if there was a doctor or nurse on the scene, the caller said, "No, there isn't a doctor." The operator then the caller to stand near the teenager as they informed them that paramedics were on the way.
'Who saved Bronny James' life'
“Help is already on the way, OK, get next to him with the phone. We’re already on the way. … Fire department, paramedics are already on the way,” the dispatcher said. Just a few moments after the call, James was transported to the hospital by ambulance. He was briefly in an intensive care unit at Cedars-Sinai Medical, and by Tuesday, he was in stable condition. On Thursday, Cedars-Sinai revealed that James has been discharged from the hospital after the terrifying ordeal and had made good progress. “Thanks to the swift and effective response by the USC athletics’ medical staff, Bronny James was successfully treated for a sudden cardiac arrest,” Cedars-Sinai Medical Group cardiologist Dr Merije Chukumerije said in a statement.
“He arrived at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center fully conscious, neurologically intact, and stable. Mr James was cared for promptly by highly-trained staff and has been discharged home, where he is resting. Although his workup will be ongoing, we are hopeful for his continued progress and are encouraged by his response, resilience, and his family and community support,” Dr Chukumerije continued. After Bronny’s discharge, LeBron James expressed his gratitude to all that helped the family through this difficult time.
'Will have more to say when we're ready'
"I want to thank the countless people sending my family love and prayers. We feel you and I'm so grateful. Everyone doing great. We have our family together, safe and healthy, and we feel your love. Will have more to say when we're ready but I wanted to tell everyone how much your support has meant to all of us! #JamesGang,” the Lakers star said in a tweet. LeBron James has been an active supporter of his two sons' basketball dreams, even using his off days during the Los Angeles Lakers' season to fly several hours to attend their games. Bronny is a five-star recruit, who recently joined the USC Trojans team and is eligible for the 2024 NBA Draft.
