EAST HAMPTON, NEW YORK: Abigail Disney was one among 14 climate activists who were reportedly detained last week for jamming an airport that only deals with private and charter flights. The protestors made a chain by joining their hands using PVC pipes and duct tape. It has been said that the granddaughter of Disney co-founder Roy O Disney was protesting against the usage of private jets by rich people.
Activists from New York Communities for Change, Planet Over Profit, and Sunrise Movement NYC also demonstrated alongside her at East Hampton Airport in Wainscott, New York. In a statement via Fox News, the 63-year-old social activist shared, “As a person who has been privileged enough to use private jets, I know it’s hard to give up a luxury that is special. But I also know that the time has passed for spewing greenhouse gasses like this merely for our personal comfort.”
‘It is time for real change’
She continued, “The events of the past week alone, with Earth’s average temperature hitting an all-time high, drought and fatal heat waves across the country, floods in Vermont and New York, and ocean temperatures around Florida well over 90 degrees, should remove all doubt once and for all,” before adding, “The wealthiest 1% uses as much greenhouse gas as the entire bottom 50%. It is time for real change and this is the most obvious place to start.”
Disney was reportedly arrested on Friday, July 14, and was asked to give her fingerprints. Her mugshot was also taken. On Twitter, she posted, “At 63 I still had not popped my fingerprint/mug shot cherry so I did this. Because the last thing this planet needs is billionaires spewing greenhouse gases to get to their palatial beach homes. Just so wrong.”
Planet Over Profit organizer Teddy Ogborn also issued a statement, saying, “As long as the 1 percent continues to needlessly poison our air and heat our Earth, we will continue to escalate our actions against them.”
‘You inspire me’
Meanwhile, several people showed their support to Disney with a user tweeting, “Abby - once again, standing up (or locking down) on the right side of history!!! Thank you for all you do. ❤️” Another wrote, “Thank you, Abigail!! I am behind your efforts 100%!!”
“Bless you, Abigail! 😍 You inspire me,” a third wrote while another added, “Thank you. The amount of self-awareness you must have, born into one of the wealthiest and most well-known families, is staggering. I’d love to know how you came to this place. 💕”
Who is Abigail Disney's husband?
Disney has reportedly been married to film producer Pierre Hauser since 1988. The pair share four children together – Olivia Hauser, Charlotte Hauser, Eamon Hauser, and Henry Hauser. As per North Star Fund, Hauser is also into activism like his wife.
The married also founded the Daphne Foundation, which “invests in organizations that empower community residents directly affected by poverty, violence, and discrimination.” Besides, Hauser’s Instagram bio says, “I photograph cityscapes, street scenes, architecture, puddles, found abstracts. In India and Liberia, I’ve done documentary projects.”
