AUSTIN, TEXAS: Camila Alves McConaughey made a rare statement about her husband Matthew McConaughey while dispelling the myth that he is a wild-eyed stoner.
The 53-year-old actor's longtime spouse, whom he married in 2012, stated that he is nothing like most of his classic characters, despite playing a burnt-out poet in 'The Beach Bum' (2018) and a laid-back high school graduate in 'Dazed and Confused' (1993).
Camila Alves says Matthew McConaughey is 'the opposite' of stoner persona
The 41-year-old entrepreneur and model claimed that, unlike some fans' previous perceptions of him, Oscar winner McConaughey is more like his mother, Mary Kathleen "Kay" McCabe, as per Daily Mail.
On Tuesday's episode of Southern Living's 'Biscuits & Jam' podcast, Alves remarked, "When we first start dating, it was this image of Matthew of getting high, laid back, no shirt, whatever. Which I'm like, 'The guy doesn't even smoke. What is this vision coming from?'"
McConaughey, 53, has played the laid-back stoner bro role in several films, but according to Alves, it is not his genuine personality at home.
She added, "He's actually the opposite, and he's like his mom. She's very organized, very minimalistic, very on time, very prepared, and he gets a lot of those traits from her."
Matthew McConaughey is not as romantic as his onscreen roles
Alves previously noted that McConaughey's demeanor doesn't mesh well with the roles he portrays. Alves revealed in February 2014 that her husband wasn't as romantic as some of his legendary rom-com appearances.
Along with actors like Kate Hudson, Jennifer Lopez, and Sarah Jessica Parker, she mocked him for being unlike the protagonists in some of his most well-known romantic movies.
Alves once remarked on 'Inside the Actors Studio' that it was "very funny because people see him onscreen or out there in public in a certain way, and they have this vision of him being this romantic and so passionate."
"Just very romantic and grabs you and kisses you. And sometimes I’m like, ‘Who is this guy? Can you be a little bit of that?’" McConaughey's wife at the time.
Why Matthew McConaughey is considered a stoner?
The Texas-born actor was known as a bongo-playing, bong-smoking free spirit who enjoyed playing the drums while high on pot before meeting his wife.
In 1999, the cops arrived at his door in response to a neighbor's noise complaint. They discovered him nude, stoned, and with a bong close by.
Apparently, McConaughey resisted being taken into custody and was taken to jail for both resistance and marijuana possession.
The accusations were ultimately dismissed, but he still had to pay a $50 fine for disturbing the peace—a pittance for an actor making $4 million per movie at the time.
Following their encounter in a pub, McConaughey and Alves started dating in 2006. Alves initially turned down the Oscar winner, but she eventually gave in and agreed to go on a date with him.
In his autobiography 'Greenlights', McConaughey described taking off his clothes, opening his windows, and smoking "a bowl" while letting Henri Dikongue's exquisite African melodic sounds play via his home speakers.
