NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Queen of Pop Madonna was rushed to a New York hospital over a sudden illness after being found unresponsive on Saturday, June 24. She was reportedly intubated and stayed in the ICU for several days, her manager Guy Oseary wrote in a post on Instagram. The medical condition also prompted the singer to postpone her much-awaited Celebration Tour, which was set to begin in Vancouver, Canada, on July 15.
Oseary confirmed that the ‘Express Yourself’ singer had a “serious bacterial infection” that led to her hospitalization and mentioned that “she is still under medical care” even though her “health is improving” and she was expected to make a “full recovery.” Meanwhile, the singer's health crisis sparked an online battle between vaxxers and anti-vaxxers. While some social media users claimed that the singer’s illness was linked ti the Covid-19 vaccine, others attempted to debunk the theories.
‘Madonna confirmed had 2 doses of the Moderna Vaccines’
In the wake of Madonna’s medical emergency, some internet users attempted to attribute the singer’s health condition to Covid-19 vaccines. They claimed that the pop star’s condition was a result of her taking the jab. “Please pray for Madonna while she recovers in the ICU room after being found unresponsive for what some reports are saying appears to be vaccine related which would be unfortunate if true since Madonna was one of the loudest supporters of the COVID-19 vaccine,” a user tweeted.
“Madonna confirmed had 2 doses of the Moderna Vaccines. She was hospitalized early this week and intubated. Madonna has also openly supported mandated vaccinations,” added another user. “Madonna LEAD THE CHARGE on the #covid craze. She mocked those who wouldn’t get the jab, she harassed those online who questioned it… she suggested making the vaccine and gun control, mandatory. Now she is in the hospital. I imagine soon she will die from blood clots. Wake up,” a third wrote.
“Correct me if I am wrong, Was This NOT the same Madonna telling you to shut up and get your lovely, magic, enchanting ‘vaccine’ shot. Seems Like She Is In A Little Bit Of Trouble," another added. “I'm reading reports of people claiming that Madonna took the Moderna, and now other people are quickly dismissing the possibility. But her donations to fund the vaccine are no secret. This falls in line with many other celebrities suffering health problems recently,” another opined.
One said, “Hope she didn’t get the same Moderna batch my dad got… he just had a stroke and can’t put a sentence together… at least he’s still alive. (It was his first dose) 4.7% of the people who got his batch died… another 4% had serious adverse reactions,” while another added, “We'll see how she feels about those so-called 'vaccines' if she ever gets better.”
‘Anti-vaccine influencers are at it again’
While some people shared their theories about the Covid vaccine’s connection to Madonna’s health condition, several others took to Twitter to debunk the claims. “Anti-vaccine influencers are at it again. Madonna is receiving treatment for a serious bacterial infection," one wrote. “Madonna's in ICU fighting for her life and midwits are already blaming it on vaccines without a shred of evidence,” another wrote. “It’s wildly distasteful to see the Right wing making fun of Madonna as she’s literally fighting for her life… I see many people already trying to blame the vaccine with no evidence and it’s times like this that remind me to never blindly follow a movement (again),” added another.
“The antivaxxer nutters will be out in force tonight on about poor Madonna and her bacterial infection, saying she'd be grand if she hadn't taken the vaccine,” one said. “Just because she had 2 vaccines doesn’t mean there is a correlation! Do your research,” another argued.
One mentioned, “Nice to see all the anti-vaxxer loons jumping on the Madonna topic as though vaccines of any kind had anything to do with what happened to her. I swear to God, someone could die of a gunshot wound, on camera, and these idiots will claim it was really a vaccine that did it,” while another tweeted, “Madonna is recovering from a bacterial infection, yet people are already hijacking her personal health issues to turn this into a covid vaccine debate. When will people start to recognise that these so-called influencers are nothing but outrage parasites?”
What did Madonna say about Covid-19 vaccines?
Amid the height of the Covid pandemic in 2020, Madonna’s Instagram account was reportedly flagged for spreading “false information” after she shared a video of Dr Stella Immanuel, who made false claims about social distancing and face masks being ineffective to protect oneself from the virus and made an unconfirmed claim about hydroxychloroquine being a cure. The ‘Papa Don’t Preach’ singer reportedly came under fire at the time by calling Dr Immanuel her “hero,” the Toronto Sun reported.
That same year, Madonna reportedly donated $1M to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundations’ Therapeutics Accelerator program, which was working towards finding a cure for Covid. The singer took to her Instagram to share the importance of vaccination at the time. “I must admit, it took me time to accept and process and modify my own lifestyle so I can protect the lives of my family, myself and the rest of the human race. I cannot express enough the importance of people taking this virus seriously,” she wrote.
“I’m talking about this: I am so impressed by the work of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the COVID-19 Therapeutics Accelerator’s urgent efforts to find new or existing drugs that could effectively prevent or treat the disease. Harnessing the strength and knowledge of the research community, the Accelerator’s critical scientific progress will inform how we end this pandemic and prevent future impact from the virus,” the musician continued.
During another interview with V Magazine, Madonna said that she was compelled to think twice before sharing thoughts and opinions about vaccines and social issues as she does not want fans to turn on her for “disturbing the peace.” “The way people think about the pandemic, for instance, that the vaccination is the only answer or the polarization of thinking you’re either on this side or the other. There’s no debate, there’s no discussion,” she said at the time, adding, “No one’s allowed to speak their mind right now. No one’s allowed to say what they really think about things for fear of being cancelled, cancel culture. In cancel culture, disturbing the peace is probably an act of treason."
