The Rock buys a house for UFC fighter who was sleeping in a gym
A wholesome video of Dwayne Johnson buying a UFC fighter a house has gone viral online and has left people in tears. The clip shared to Johnson's Instagram shows the actor surprising a man he has never met with the ultimate gift. Themba T L Gorimbo (@thembagorimbo_mma) recently won his first fight with $7 (£5) in his bank account. He was also said to be sleeping on the couch in the gym he trains at. In the caption, Johnson explained: "After the fight, he sold his fight gear (trunks & gloves) online and made $7,000. Instead of using the money to find a place to live, he built a bush pump so his village back in Zimbabwe can have clean water." The footage shows Johnson sneaking up on Gorimbo in the Miami gym, who gets emotional when he realises the surprise. Death of Andy Rourke highlights cross-generational love of The Smiths
Death of Andy Rourke highlights cross-generational love of The Smiths
Andy Rourke, best known for being the bassist of British band The Smiths, has passed away aged 59, from pancreatic cancer. The passing was announced this morning from former band member Johnny Marr. Marr, renounced as one of the best guitarists in music, wrote in a tweet: "Andy will be remembered as a kind and beautiful soul by those who knew him and as a supremely gifted musician by music fans." Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Many have shared their respects and love of Rourke. John, who has been a fan of The Smiths since the beginning of the band’s career, shared how ‘awful’ and ‘tragic’ the passing of the bassist was. Others shared the first time they discovered The Smiths and Rourke’s incredible talent. But it’s not just those who grew up listening and attending concerts of The Smiths that are devastated. Rourke’s passing has beautifully highlighted how, despite the band breaking up in 1987, The Smiths continues to be loved by all ages. The use of The Smiths’ music in pop culture, from Ferris Buller’s Day Off to (500) Days of Summer means the band is perpetually being discovered by younger audiences. As well as those who knew of the band from growing up listening to their parent’s music, as some shared. Teenagers took to TikTok to mourn the loss of Rourke in the same way that fans in their 50s and 60s were. With some saying how they found out at school with their classmates, who were all shocked and saddened by the passing. @mollieluvscats rest in peace, thank you for your wonderful music, you were an incredible inspiration Those who knew and worked with Rourke also shared their memories and paid tributes to the bassist. New Order paid tribute to ‘one of the founder members of a great Manchester band.’ Billy Bragg also shared on Twitter that he has ‘great memories of him playing with Johnny Marr and myself on the Red Wedge tour.’ Mike Joyce, The Smiths’ drummer, also paid his respects. He wrote ‘not only the most talented bass player I’ve ever had the privilege to play with but the sweetest, funniest lad I’ve ever met.” He added, “his musical legacy is perpetual.” Have your say in our news democracy. Heartstopper cast flip middle fingers at anti-LGBTQ+ protesters at London Pride
Heartstopper cast flip middle fingers at anti-LGBTQ+ protesters at London Pride
The cast of hit Netflix show Heartstopper gave the middle finger to anti-LGBTQ+ religious protestors at Pride in London. Stars of the show including Joe Locke, Kit Connor, Yasmin Finney, Will Gao, Sebastian Croft, Kizzy Edgell and Tobie Donovan flipped the bird at the protesters from their own float on Saturday. Coming-of-age comedy drama Heartstopper enters its second series in August, after Netflix shared a teaser this weekend. It was adapted for television from Alice Oseman’s graphic novels of the same name. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter Stars were also pictured dancing along to hits including Whitney Houston’s ‘I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)’ and Kylie Minogue’s ‘Padam Padam’, and blowing kisses towards the protesters. More than a million people descended on central London on 31 June for the 51st annual Pride parade, flooding the capital with rainbows and glitter as people turned out to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community in Britain. Sending a message to all those who took part, Pride in London said: “Thank you for your support and ensuring no-one marched alone. We hope you had an amazing day full of love and pride. Please stay safe this evening and take care of each other.” Separately, this year’s Pride was disrupted by activists from Just Stop Oil, who temporarily halted the parade, sprayed the road and sat in front of a Coca-Cola float. The group had previously warned it would take action, calling on organisers of the event to ban floats from “high-polluting” sponsors and to condemn new oil, gas and coal. A statement from LGBTQ+ members of Just Stop Oil said: “These partnerships embarrass the LGBTQ+ community at a time when much of the cultural world is rejecting ties to these toxic industries.” Have your say in our news democracy.
