LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: According to studies, borderline personality disorder (BPD) affects 1.6% of Americans. That suggests more than four million people in the nation have been diagnosed with the disorder. This large figure consists of not just common people but celebrities as well.
It was recently reported that ‘SNL’ alum Pete Davidson entered rehab seeking treatment for PTSD and BPD a few weeks after leaving an expletive-filled voicemail for PETA, as per Daily Mail. Davidson is reportedly staying in the same Pennsylvania rehab facility where his friend and coworker, John Mulaney, sought treatment for alcohol and drug abuse. One of Davidson's friends said, "Pete regularly goes to rehab for ‘tune ups’ and to take a mental break, so that’s what’s happening."
Davidson has been open about his struggles with BPD and often spreads awareness about the disorder. He had once stated that just because he was famous and suffered from a mental illness did not mean he could not be content or in a committed relationship.
BPD can be very challenging to manage as a disorder for anyone, especially for a celebrity in the limelight. Here are some of the celebrities with BPD whom, like Davidson, have been open about their struggles.
Angelina Jolie
Oscar-winning actress, philanthropist and former Goodwill Ambassador for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Angelina Jolie has been open about her battles with the disorder and has even spoken about how it affected her life. She was diagnosed with BPD diagnosis after checking herself into a mental health facility in the '90s due to homicidal and suicidal thoughts.
Amber Heard
Johnny Depp's ex-wife, Amber Heard, reportedly showed all the signs of BPD, including mood swings, anger, and anxiety, which were revealed during the infamous defamation trial. A forensic psychologist diagnosed her with BPD after observing her and going over the case records from the trial. Depp's victory in his lawsuit against Heard brought BPD back into the spotlight.
Amy Winehouse
The late singer Amy Winehouse is a prime example of how devastating BPD can be. She was among the celebrities who showed signs of the disorder and was open about her battles with self-harm, eating disorders and depression in both interviews and her music. According to the The Times UK, doctors said she had the disorder but never got treatment for it as she refused to be diagnosed.
Madison Bailey
Another celebrity who has been open about her struggles with BPD is Madison Bailey from the TV show 'Outer Banks.' Bailey has been attempting to manage the disorder on a daily basis since she was diagnosed with it at 17. In addition to becoming a mental health awareness advocate, she inspired ordinary individuals and celebrities who suffer from depression and other mental illnesses to seek treatment by being upfront about her experience.
Lindsay Lohan
Lindsay Lohan has exhibited a number of symptoms of BPD, including alcohol and drug misuse, impulsive behavior and self-harm. In multiple interviews, she admitted to hurting herself, and showed the scars of hurting herself.
Anna Nicole Smith
Model, actress, and TV personality Anna Nicole Smith had BPD, according to a psychiatrist. In addition to her troubled marriages and battles with addiction, Smith's BPD struggles were extensively reported in the media. Despite her accomplishments and public demeanor, her mental health issues eventually led to her untimely death in 2007.
