LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: BET Awards have been consistently eventful as the 'Culture's Biggest Night' and Coi Leray added to the unmatched energy of the awards show. The outfit she wore for her much-hyped performance became the talk of the night and it was not just because she looked an absolute stunner in it!
The rapper displayed names of big female rappers in the industry in big and bold letters on her outfit. The names also included that of Latto, the artist Leray recently had a row with. Fans took to Twitter to react to her outfit choice and also the message she was trying to send across.
Coi Leray's outfit speaks for women's unity
Leray wore the said outfit for her big performance of the night with the TikTok sensation song 'Players' that she worked on with Busta Rhymes. The rapper along with her back dancers sported a black-and-white pop theme. She was wearing a leather jacket and pants with a sporty bra, all of them studded with black and silver rhinestones. But if you looked closely, Leray's outfit was much more than just a stylish jacket-pants set.
The rapper's outfit also displayed names of other female rappers in the industry, including many who were present at the show like Ice Spice. What was especially noticeable in her outfit was the inclusion of Latto's name amongst the others. Latto and Leray previously had a row over Latto name-dropping and body-shaming the latter in her song back in April. The 'On My Way' singer then hinted at promoting unity and friendship through her outfit which is often not the case with women in the rap industry.
'Ladies need love & healing'
On her bold but heartwarming outfit choice, many fans and viewers of BET Awards took to Twitter to react to Leray's outfit. A fan account of Leray's listed all the artists mentioned on her outfit, "Coi’s outfit was homage to female rap and included Roxanne Shanté, Yo-Yo, Missy Elliot, Lil Kim, Da Brat, Left Eye, Foxy Brown, Nicki, Latto, Doechii and more." They continued with another tweet saying, "The back of Coi’s outfit at the #BETAwards included Gangsta Boo, Cardi, Megan Thee Stallion, Bia, Dej Loaf, Remy Ma, Trina, Khia, Shawnna, Flo Milli, Maya The Don, Lola Brooke, and Glorilla."
Other fans appreciated what Leray did with her outfit, one of them saying, "Coi Leray wearing an outfit with all female rappers names on it at the #BETAwards is a HUGE OLIVE BRANCH! The ladies need love & healing." Another one tweeted, "Artists are at their best when they're being themselves. From that Ebro interview to this, coi needs her flowers cause it would have been so easy to go with the negative and honestly it could have been more lucrative but doing this shows Character."
While some took the Latoo inclusion positively, others thought it meant to slam Latto back because of her name's placement on her backside. One fan tweeted, "stan twitter- “she put latto on her ass to say to latto to ‘kiss my ass’”. Another one responded, "I don’t love the shade but I’m not mad at the fit lol that’s why lotta ain’t take her name out the song."
Others didn't fail to make fun of the whole situation on the fan side of Twitter saying, "me trying to read all the female rapper names on Coi Leray’s outfit," pointing out that fans were being very particular with what all names Leray had included on the outfit.
