LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Harry Styles and Lizzo are known for their close friendship and have seemingly been each other's industry best friends over the years. However, the internet is now divided over their longtime close bond after three of Lizzo's former backup dancers filed a lawsuit accusing her of sexual harassment, weight-shaming, and creating a hostile work environment.
In the wake of the allegations, several social media users alleged that despite being friends, Lizzo has shared some inappropriate jokes about Styles in the past, alongside other male celebrities like BTS, Chris Evans, Shawn Mendes, Louis Tomlinson, and Niall Horan. Meanwhile, others scrutinized Styles' friendship with Lizzo and questioned the 'Watermelon Sugar' hitmaker's silence over the current controversy.
'Her friendship with Harry Styles always creeped me out'
In light of the allegations against Lizzo, several social media users voiced their discomfort about the former's comments on Styles despite being friends. "The way Lizzo has made sexual comments about male celebs like Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, and Chris Evans but people defended her because they were just “jokes” when they were never funny and were out of line in the first place," one said.
"So let’s act surprised… I never really liked Lizzo, the way she sexualized Harry styles even though she was his friend…," added another. "I knew lizzo was weird ever since she made some bizarre jokes i think of the sexual type about harry styles even though they were friends," a third wrote. One simply tweeted, "I’m sorry what. #Lizzo #HarryStyles" alongside a clip of Lizzo making a controversial joke about Styles," while another shared, "With all the lizzo stuff coming out am i finally allowed to say her friendship with harry styles always creeped me out the way she would insanely sexualize him whenever they were together."
'I’m side-eyeing Harry Styles'
While several fans called out Lizzo for her past comments about Styles, many also scrutinized the latter for his longtime friendship with the 'Juice' singer. "Me trying to figure out what will Harry Styles do after these lizzo news," one wrote. "I remember that theory going around that Harry styles may not be a great person bc his friends keep having allegations come out against them & now lizzo.. it makes me think he’s a major push over & is nice to every1 BUT if that’s the case a friend to all is a friend to none," another tweeted.
"The news about lizzo really makes me question the company that harry styles keeps. close friends with james cordon and lizzo? it's not sounding good 4 u babes," a third opined. One said, "I’m side eyeing harry styles who not only has a bs “treat people with kindness” slogan but also has lizzo as one of his #1 public friends," while another added, "Wondering how good of a person Harry Styles actually is if he surrounds himself with people like Olivia Wilde, James Corden, and now Lizzo."
"First Ellen, then James Corden, and now Lizzo. @Harry_Styles needs some new friends," one said. "@Harry_Styles i hope you stop engaging with lizzo. u dont want those kind of people to be in ur circle unless youre just like them. youre not. so..." tweeted another. "@Harry_Styles cut off Lizzo cos you don’t need that toxicity in your life," another fan added.
What did Lizzo say about Harry Styles?
Styles and Lizzo have long been known as music industry BFFs, with fans even naming the duo "Hizzo." Their friendship began back in 2019 after Styles covered Lizzo's hit song 'Juice' and told BBC, "She's exactly what you want an artist to be...which is yourself."
The duo went on perform a rendition of 'Juice' at Lizzo's Super Bowl LIV concert in January 2020. Lizzo also covered Styles' 'Adore You' at BBC1 before the pair showed off their friendship at the 2020 Brit Awards. Lizzo placed a kiss atop Styles' hand and the pair even cuddled up while sitting side-by-side, holding tequila in their hands.
Lizzo and Styles' photo went viral after the duo posed together during their reunion at the 2021 Grammy Awards. Last year, Lizzo joined Styles onstage at Coachella while the latter sent her flowers after Lizzo's song 'Damn' replaced Styles' 'As It Was' on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Despite their close friendship, fans have accused Lizzo of making controversial comments about Styles before. Back in 2020, fans trended #LizzoIsOverParty after a TikTok video of the rapper having a popsicle while watching Styles perform at the 2019 Jingle Bell concert resurfaced online.
Lizzo was also criticized after she jokingly suggested that she slept with Styles by saying, "The only collab we had is his d*ck in my a**" during an interview. However, the comments did not seem to have an impact on Lizzo and Styles' friendship over the years.
