LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Marvel Studios has roped in another big name to become a part of their extended cinematic universe. This time, it’s the ‘Game of Thrones’ star, Emilia Clarke, who has agreed to etch her name in the history books of Marvel. The production company has kickstarted its fifth phase of films and series, and ‘Secret Invasion’ is the first to come out in a long list of series scheduled to be released in the next two years.
In the miniseries, Samuel L Jackson returns as Nick Fury to apprehend the invasion of the planet by a familiar foe in Skrulls, who are looking for a new planet to settle after their world was destroyed by the Kree’s. The Skrulls can shapeshift to simulate any human figure, which makes them nearly impossible to catch. It looks like Fury will have to gear up to fight an enemy, which he helped create as Skrulls have taken places in powerful positions on the Earth. Clarke plays the character of a Skrull named G’iah, the daughter of Talos, a Skrull commander who is friends with Nick Fury. But only time will tell if G’iah is an ally of humanity or if she's hellbent to destroy the humans who failed in their promise to provide a home to the Skrulls.
Who is G’iah?
G’iah, the daughter of Talos, escaped the war on Skrullos with her mother and many other Skrulls and wandered the universe for a refuge, eventually landing on Earth. Talos was reunited with G’iah after help from Carol Danvers (Captain Marvel), Nick Fury, and Monica Rambeau and later developed an intimate friendship with Rambeau. Just like her father, she possesses superhuman strength and can easily shapeshift like other Skrulls. Moreover, in the Marvel comics, G'iah has a family with three daughters and her partner Klrr on Earth.
The character of G’iah is sympathetic to the Skrulls' fight for a new planet. She is extremely determined to help her kind and will confront anyone who comes before her goals. G’iah is bitter towards Fury and the rest of the humans, but given her father's inclination towards humanity, one can expect a powerful battle between two schools of thought. But as far as her allegiances go, G’iah will fight for the Skrulls unless Talos convinces her otherwise.
Is ‘Secret Invasion’ Emilia Clarke’s Marvel debut?
The character of G’iah was introduced in ‘Captain Marvel’ in her Skrull avatar near the end of the film. She appears in a reunion scene set on a space station with Talos and her mother. However, it’s only in ‘Secret Invasion’ that G’iah has been given a human figure in the form of Clarke, allowing the actress to debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It will be exciting to see Clarke don another role in a different universe after her successful stint with 'Game of Thrones'.
Marvel's ‘Secret Invasion’ starts streaming on Disney+ from June 21.
