LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Documentaries and true crime are more popular than ever in the current times when being aware of societal issues around you and the world has become crucial. It is often the medium of this genre that makes people hesitate in trying them out, labeling them as 'boring' and resembling a newsfeed.
'Sound of Freedom' breaks down these assumptions and has reached a shocking commercial success. The film follows the real story of a sex trafficking chain that was discovered and tackled by an ex-special agent. It also had some controversy surrounding it which affected its release after its completion. Find out where and how you can watch 'Sound of Freedom' below.
Why was 'Sound of Freedom' controversial?
'Sound of Freedom' is one of the rare faith-based religious films that has managed to do so well commercially. Angel Studios was the one to take the film up and distribute it around the country through unique ways of donations and crowdfunding. It has been up there next to big franchise releases of 'Insidious: The Red Door' and 'Indiana Jones: Dial of Destiny' in terms of its country-wide collection. The movie was also previously made under 20th Century Fox which later shelved it after merging with Disney.
But 'Sound of Freedom' did become a victim of association with the conspiracy theory that made the rounds, especially in 2017. QAnon was known as a cult that was involved in a sex trafficking chain quite like the one represented in the film. Critiques found issues with the film pushing the white male savior trope in the forefront of the movie while having the underlying nod to the conspiracy.
Where can you watch 'Sound of Freedom'?
'Sound of Freedom' was released in theaters on Independence Day, Fourth of July. Besides that, you will also be able to stream the movie if watching it in the theaters is not an option for you.
Angel Studios has its own streaming platform where they mostly offer shows related to themes of faith and religion. It is possible that a couple of months after the theater release, the film will be made available to watch on the app. It is unclear if any other streaming platform like Disney+ or Hulu will also be picking it up or not.
