LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Phase Five of Marvel is all set to kick off with 'Secret Invasion', which will release on Disney+ on June 21. The show follows Nick Fury as he returns to Earth after a long space mission and uncovers a plot by a race of shape-shifting aliens, called the Skrulls, to infiltrate Earth. His goal is to stop them but the Skrulls have assumed powerful positions as humans across the world and unfortunately for Fury, the Avengers do not exist anymore. 'Secret Invasion' picks up from where previous MCU installments in which the Skrulls were first introduced left off. The Skrulls were first seen in ‘Captain Marvel’ and then in ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’, in the end-credits scene. The Skrulls want a new home for their kind, which Fury promised but failed to deliver. Now, they are invading Earth to remind Fury of his promise.
The connection between MCU's movies and shows has become more distinct since ‘Avengers Endgame'. This often raises questions about where these shows figure on MCU’s timeline. Some of the commonly asked questions are whether they were part of the same timeline or exist in a previous timeline. When ‘Secret Invasion’ was announced, fans wanted answers about the show’s position in the timeline, and now they have a clear answer.
‘Secret Invasion’ takes place in present-day MCU
The series is set after 'Avengers Endgame’, placing it in the 2023-2025 timeline of Phase Five of the MCU. The movies and series after ‘Avengers Endgame' will take place a few years in the future, right after the infamous Thanos’ snap. The year 2025 seems to be when 'Secret Invasion' takes place.
Marvel Studios' VP of Production & Development Jonathan Schwartz confirmed that ‘Secret Invasion’ takes place in "present-day MCU" after both The Blip and ‘She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.’ He said, “It’s present-day MCU, is what we’re calling it. So it exists along the timeline that the shows come out in. So, post-'She-Hulk,' post-Blip, right at this exact present day in the MCU. I think that’s all I can say.”
How will ‘Secret Invasion’ affect the future timeline of Phase Five?
Kevin Feige recently revealed in an interview that ‘Secret Invasion’s “repercussions will be felt in the coming projects.” The fifth phase of Marvel has six more series coming up, including the shows ‘What If’ and ‘Daredevil Born Again’, and the movies ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ and ‘The Marvels’, that will expand the universe. If the Skrulls are victorious in ‘Secret Invasion’, the superheroes of the upcoming shows/series will have no chance but to bear the burden of what Fury started.
‘Secret Invasion’s' first episode will debut on Disney+ on Wednesday, June 21.
