LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: The premiere of 'The Bachelorette' Season 20 had an unusual twist where Charity Lawson's brother went undercover. However, his disguise did not garner great feedback, nor was it seen as amusing by the viewers.
During Season 27 of 'The Bachelor,' Charity invited Zach Shallcross to Columbus, Georgia, to meet her family. Her brother, Nehemiah, questioned Zach about his sentiments toward the other three ladies and received an unsatisfying, charmless response. Charity sobbed as Nehemiah presented the facts of the situation to her and pointed out the very real risk of grief. Charity, who had been the season's front-runner up until that moment, was sent home in the same episode. It wasn't the worst split of the season; that honor goes to the embarrassing rose ceremony held via Zoom. But it made such an impression on Bachelor Nation that Charity was chosen as the lead for Season 20 of 'The Bachelorette'. And it hurt her brother so profoundly that he appeared in the season premiere to ensure Charity's heart isn't destroyed again.

Charity's brother sports a Party City mustache
'The Bachelorette' has been doing this for 20 seasons, so pulling off too many shocks is difficult. Nonetheless, the producers did their best to elevate Nehemiah's narrative to "the most dramatic episode ever" status. The 25 guys fighting for her affection are introduced briefly: there's a professional wrestler, a world record jumper, and more than one Aaron. However, Charity's attention is swiftly drawn to a man whom she is informed she already knows. Charity started panicking when presenter Jesse Palmer informed her that the following limo was carrying a man from her past, delivering the exact footage that the network has been playing to tease the debut for weeks.
That man just turned out to be Nehemiah. He explained to Charity that he was there to help and gave her a few encouraging words and a hug. As he walked away from his sister, he admitted that he was also there to gather information, donning an implausible curly wig and a fake mustache to go undercover as a barman at the house.
Fortunately, his undercover persona was simply there to offer drinks and not pretend to win her heart. However, this raises a new issue: he must actually make drinks. For the first part of the program, he remained too preoccupied with filling every contestant's drink and was unable to accomplish much else. Also, Nehemiah is a dentist, so those beverages couldn't possibly have been nice. The men were blown away when he announced his true identity, their reactions being exaggerated by the cocktails he had been making them. All the suitors were worried about having said something disrespectful or having given him too many unwanted sexual details about his sisters but this mostly did not happen.
'Is charity not capable of handling herself?'
On Twitter, viewers couldn't help but react to the disguise Nehemiah went in, with one saying, "Charity’s brother watched an episode of thats so raven and knew what he had to do in that mansion." Another Twitter user questioned, "I love Charity’s brother and all but why are producers making us waste our time with this fake undercover thing?" Another also asked, "Disney got all this money and they couldn’t get this man a better disguise?" A fourth user also noted, "The “protective” big brother gimmick is a bit silly. is charity not capable of handling herself? we don’t need to see her brother until hometowns."
One angry user asked, "This whole brother thing is definitely one of the cringier stunts #TheBachelorette has pulled. Will he also be negotiating the dowry?" Describing his look, one wrote, "Charity’s brother got on a get up *only* a white person would disguise a black guy in." One user asked, "I’m dying, why did they give Charity’s brother a Jheri curl and a fake mustache. They ain’t need to do all that." One fan noted, "But did anyone know what her brother looked like prior to the season? because he probably didn’t need the disguise."
'The Bachelorette' Season 20 airs new episodes every Monday on ABC at 9 pm ET.
