The storyline of ‘Extraction 2’ centers around Tyler Rake's next mission as he returns after barely surviving the last mission in Dhaka, Bangladesh. He embarks on another dangerous journey to save a ruthless gangster’s imprisoned family. The smashing performance of Hemsworth in the action film brings more insanity to Tyler Rake’s character as, this time, the prominent star has gone to great lengths to achieve brilliance In his performance. The director of the movie, Sam Hargrave, wanted to outdo the one-shot escape sequence in ‘Extraction’. This was achieved in Hemsworth's much-anticipated 21-minute shot where he was set on fire over 10 times.
Chris Hemsworth's 21-minute on-fire sequence
According to Collider, the 21-minute shot was originally planned as a 14-minute shot, however, the final length exceeded 20 minutes. Of course, a continuous 21-minute shot is impossible to achieve inclusive of stuntwork and action sequence, thus, deception was required. Sam Hargrave explained, “We build in certain stitch points where we could. But in those broken-up pieces you still have sequences that will be between 30 seconds and a minute-and-a-half. Sometimes there are 50, 60, 75 moves in a row with dozens of stunt performers. And it was at night, in the middle of winter. Chris had red ears and a red nose because he was freezing”.
Additionally, a glimpse of Chris on fire can be seen in the official teaser and trailer. During an interview at a press conference in Manilla, Hargrave revealed that he was set on fire multiple times and teased that he “enjoyed lighting Chris Hemsworth on fire” and it was “the most rewarding part”.
‘Sounds awesome mate’
‘Extraction 2’ director Sam Hargrave revealed during an interview, “I’ve never come across a challenge that he wasn’t up for. When I pitched that to him, actually setting him on fire, not doing it via CGI, he kind of looked at me sideways, smiled, and said, ‘Sounds awesome mate.’” Chris Hemsworth evidently never backs down from an action-thriller challenge and we’ll get to see more of it in ‘Extraction 2’.
‘Extraction 2’ is set to release on Netflix on June 16, 2023.
