NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Tuesday, September 19, marked ‘Register-a-Friend’ Day, and ‘Morning Joe’ hosts Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough masked up as they registered themselves.
'Register-a-Friend Day' is a day seeking to boost civic engagement and is for the I Am a Voter organization, co-founded by Debra Messing and Mandana Dayani, as part of National Voter Registration Day.
Brzezinski’s movement ‘Know Your Value’ shared a selfie of Brzezinski along with her husband and ‘Morning Joe’ co-host Scarborough on Instagram.
However, the internet focused less on the cause, and more on the fact that the couple wore masks.
Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough pose for a selfie
On Instagram, ‘Know Your Value’ shared a picture of the ‘Morning Joe’ hosts wearing masks. The caption read, “Its #Registerafriend! It’s worth it to play a role in our precious democracy— Friends don’t let friends skip elections! Thank you #Iamavoter for your incredible initiative.”
‘Morning Joe’ also promoted ‘Register-a-Friend’ Day after I Am a Voter co-founders Debra Messing and Mandana Dayani appeared on the morning show to talk more about the initiative.
‘Morning Joe’ hosts’ masks steal the show
As Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough participated in this initiative, their masks stole the focus. In the comment section of the selfie, one person questioned, “Masks?!” while another also asked, “Oh no, why are you in masks?”
The focus continued to remain on the masks as one user asked, “Why are you wearing masks???” A fourth person wrote, “Masks do not protect you.”
People asked the hosts to “check the reports” as one person commented, “Take those stupid masks off, they won't work, check the reports.”
Some even decided to unfollow the pair, writing, “Why on earth would you both wear masks? Expected better from y'all. Unfollowing.”
One person also spoke about how this post by Brzezinski and Scarborough had a lot of "potential" to influence, but instead, turned into a post about "wearing a mask."
The user wrote, "This post had the potential to influence people to get out the vote but instead it's turned into a post about wearing. Why?? @morningjoe if you want to make a mask statement, there are other ways! Don't dilute this important message."
