NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Singer-songwriter Madonna's most recent tour, Celebration, is anticipated to be postponed due to her recent hospitalization. By reports, Madonna spent days in an intensive care unit after becoming ill over the weekend with a "serious" infection. The 64-year-old singer-songwriter's manager Guy Oseary, 50, broke the news on Wednesday, June 28 by posting a message about his client on social media. The veteran's manager Oseary said that the 'Papa Don't Preach' singer was found unconscious in New York on June 24 and was later taken to a hospital.
However, this is not the first time the singer's health issues have garnered attention or that her tours have been postponed as a result of that. One of her earlier itineraries, the Madame X tour, had several issues after it began in September 2019. The Grammy Award winner reportedly had injuries during its run, which ended in March of the following year, and she reportedly underwent surgery later on, as per Mirror.
Madonna suffered onstage fall during Madame X gig
Between September 2019 and March 2020, Madonna dealt with hip and knee ailments while on her all-theater Madame X Tour. In October 2019, she missed a performance in New York City because she was "dealing with a knee injury." Three gigs in Boston were postponed the following month "due to doctor's orders" even though it was reported she had been advised to relax for a few days to aid in her recovery.
Madonna also suffered a coccyx injury after a chair was yanked out from under Madonna on stage during a performance. The 'Frozen' singer posted on Instagram at the time: "If only knees didn't twist and cartilage didn't tear and nothing hurt and tears never fell out of our eyes." Her inability to perform at a concert in Lisbon that month "due to pain from her ongoing injuries" caused other concerts to be impacted in January 2020.
Additionally, Madonna was said to have had surgery in 2020, and she allegedly revealed afterward that she underwent hip replacement surgery after her Madame X tour. The music legend revealed the painful execution in 2021 during her 'Madame X Presents: Madame Xtra Q&A' show. Madonna remarked at the time: "During my [2019 Madame X] tour—I don't know if you've noticed it, but I'm limping a lot—I was in more pain than I've ever been in in my life. I'm a bionic woman—I had hip replacement surgery."
Madonna tested positive for Covid-19
Madonna later revealed that she also ended up having Covid near the end of the Madame X tour in March 2020, even though it didn't seem to result in any gigs being canceled. Madonna thought she had the "very bad flu," but a Covid-19 test revealed otherwise. The singer said at the time: "Took a test the other day and I found out I have the antibodies. So tomorrow I am going to go for a long drive and roll down the window and I'm going to breathe in the COVID air. I hope the sun is shining."
Three days prior to its scheduled closing, her tour was called off as the French authorities forbade assemblages of more than 1,000 individuals owing to the pandemic. The singer provided a health update in a post on social media in May 2020, where she stated at the time: "Thank God we are all healthy and well now."
Madonna hospitalized due to 'serious bacterial infection'
On Wednesday, Madonna's manager, Oseary, used social media to explain why the celebrity spent several days in the ICU due to a bacterial infection. Oseary posted information about her condition on Instagram: "On Saturday, June 24, Madonna developed a serious bacterial infection which led to a several-day stay in the ICU. required her to stay in the ICU for several days. Her health is improving, however, she is still under medical care. A full recovery is expected."
Oseary added that Madonna's team will "pause all commitments," including the Celebration tour, but expected a "full recovery." The management also promised that fans would soon receive additional details and updated tour dates. "We will share more details with you as soon as we have them, including a new start date for the tour and for rescheduled shows," said Oseary.
