LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: ‘Jeopardy!’ has not been the same since the epic ‘Jeopardy! Masters’ tournament came to an end. Recently, fans of the game show were left stunned after one-day champ Elliott Kim got destroyed after a brutal performance.
It is not the first time that the popular game show has shocked its fans with its harsh rules, on-air blunders and especially the unbelievable performances by contestants. On Tuesday, July 4, ‘Jeopardy!’ one-day champ, Elliott Kim turned heads after callous mistakes on live TV. Elliott, a television editor, faced off with Chuck Beem, an HRIS analyst, and Kate Campolieta, a corporate communications specialist. During the Daily Double, Elliott only had $700 left after answering incorrectly, leading Kate to take the lead and becoming the new ‘Jeopardy!’ champ.
‘Jeopardy!’ one-day champ Elliott Kim’s brutal loss
During a recent episode, ‘Jeopardy!’ contestant Elliott Kim entered the game with a total winning of $24,400. His competitors included Chuck Beem and Kate Campolieta. Elliott had a total of $2,200 when he selected the category Where’s My Food for $800 and had the chance to answer the Daily Double question, giving him a chance to cover up to Kate, who was leading. The 49-year-old host, Ken Jennings, reminded him that he had a “$3000 deficit to deal with” as Kate was at $5,200 at that point.
The reigning champion placed a wager of $1500 before receiving the correct answer, “This dessert of sponge cake, ice cream & meringue that's finished in the oven was created to honor an 1867 land purchase.” However, he guessed it incorrectly, answering, “What is a Baked Alaskan?” Ken replied, “Oh, I'm sorry Elliot you were so close but you added the 'N' there. It's a Baked Alaska.” The brutal mistake by Elliott resulted in a deduction of $1500, leaving him with $700.
Later, as Elliot was starting to regain momentum, his hopes were dashed when he gave an incorrect response to the clue worth $1,600. The clue was “George Plimpton takes out an insurance policy against death & dismemberment in this 1966 book.” Elliot's answer, “What is Paper Lions?” was deemed incorrect, causing his total to plummet from $1,500 to a negative $100. Adding salt to the wound, Kate swiftly buzzed in and provided the correct answer, “What is Paper Lion?”, without the ‘S’, earning the $1,600. Ultimately, Elliot ended the game with a total of $294, while Kate emerged as the new ‘Jeopardy!’ champion with impressive winnings totaling $11,513.

Elliott Kim explains BTS of his loss
After failing miserably during ‘Jeopardy!’ Daily Double, Elliott explained his head-turning mistake in a Reddit forum, stating, “Ken first ruled it correct but immediately caught himself and threw it to the judges.” He continued, “There was a ten-minute stoppage where we had to face away from the stage while the judges furiously researched. Unfortunately for me, they couldn't find 'Baked Alaskan' as an accepted variation in any of their sources”. He also thanked his fellow competitors, adding, “Hey Chuck, great playing against you and Kate! I wish I had stuck around to say a proper goodbye to the group.”
