LONDON, UNITED KINGSOM: The release of the first trailer for the highly anticipated 'Wonka' movie has sparked comparisons between Timothee Chalamet and Johnny Depp. Chalamet has undergone a transformation to portray the beloved literary character in this whimsical prequel, making him the third actor to tackle the role.
The trailer showcases an idealistic Wonka who is determined to fulfill his dream of becoming a chocolatier, even if it means taking on the 'chocolate cartel.' The film boasts an impressive ensemble cast including Rowan Atkinson, Olivia Colman, and Hugh Grant. While many fans expressed their excitement over Chalamet's lighthearted portrayal, others insisted that he cannot surpass Johnny Depp's performance in the 2005 film 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.'
A bold move for Chalamet
Some fans also acknowledged that the new film would have a tough time surpassing their childhood nostalgia for both Depp's version and Gene Wilder's iconic portrayal in the 1971 film 'Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory’.
One user tweeted, “After seeing what Johnny Depp did, Timothy Chalamet is brave AF to even attempt the role of Willy #Wonka . By the looks of the trailer, we'll be talking about this one for quite some time too”. Twitter account Film Update tweeted, “First trailer for #WONKA starring Timothée Chalamet has been released”. In the same tweet, a user rushed to the comment section to write, “I’m sorry but this does not look as good as the one I watched as a child”. While one wrote, “It’s going to take a lot to dethrone the original But we shall see. Didn’t see any mention of a golden ticket tho lol”, another penned, “I can accept Timothee Chalamet as a Wonka but what the fuck is with the Oompa Loompa”.
From the minds of Paul King
The trailer for the Wonka movie reveals a world where imagination is stifled, as a police officer admonishes Wonka for daydreaming in public streets. However, when Wonka is at home with Lane's character, inspiration strikes, symbolized by a lightbulb illuminating above his head. Together, they embark on a journey of chocolate-making and take on the Chocolate Cartel.
The trailer features many joyous moments, with Wonka boldly declaring that his chocolate shop will be the greatest the world has ever seen. Directed by Paul King, known for his work on the critically-acclaimed 'Paddington' films, the movie stars Timothee Chalamet as the third actor to portray Willy Wonka on screen, following Gene Wilder in the 1971 film and Johnny Depp in 2005.
All three films are adaptations of Roald Dahl's classic 1964 children's book,‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’. The highly-anticipated 'Wonka' movie was filmed from late 2021 to the spring months of 2022.
