LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: ‘Good Morning America’ star Michael Strahan’s weight transformation journey is truly a testament to his handwork both on and off the field. The former NFL star weighed up to 285 pounds during his NFL days with the New York Giants.
The 51-year-old enjoyed a 15-year career in the NFL and was mostly seen as a bulky figure due to the nature of his job.
But since leaving the NFL, the ‘GMA’ host has focussed on his overall well-being and dropped massive pounds to look much slimmer and less bulky.
Did Michael Strahan lose a lot of weight?
The ‘GMA’ star made a conscious effort to lose weight when he retired from the NFL back in 2008. This included a mixture of cardio work and yoga. His current weight is 255lb.
Michael spoke about his excessive weight during NFL to Men's Health and stated, "It just wasn't me.”
During his Super Bowl-winning career, which ran from 1993 until 2007, Strahan used heavy weights to maintain his bulk. And the feared defensive end said some of that training was simply to show off his strength.
Michael also appeared on ‘All the Smoke’ podcast and shared his fluctuating experiences with weight.
"When I first got in the league, I came in at 250-something. But then they told me to gain weight, but, back then, they didn’t tell you the proper way. So, I was just fast food, pizza, I was like 280.”
Michael then pivoted to his Men’s Health interview and recalled, “And as I got older, I lost weight because I felt I didn't need the girth to help me when I was out of position on a play, I knew technique at that point.”
"But once I figured out technique, I didn't need the weight.”
How did Michael Strahan lose weight?
The ‘GMA’ star revealed that he has been following up with extensive cardio to keep his weight in check. His focus remains on using lighter weights and functional movements.
"I had to work with a lot more cardio. Flexibility, yoga — completely changed my life.”
Michael also said he used the Jane Fonda workout video to stay in shape when he was young.
"I literally bought the Jane Fonda VHS tape. I would watch TV – every commercial break I would do pushups and situps. Or, I would do the leg lifts just like Jane Fonda.”
Michael also worked on an extensive training regime with his father Gene who was based in the US Army in Mannheim, Germany.
