LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: A new chapter in the love story of 'Good Morning America' co-anchor Robin Roberts and Amber Laign is set to culminate next month as they are preparing to exchange their vows.
The longtime partners who are excited about their upcoming wedding began dating 18 years ago, according to 'GMA.'
How did Robin Roberts and Amber Laign meet?
Roberts' and Laign's long and heartwarming journey to their decision of getting married began in 2005 following a fateful blind date to the bustling studios of Times Square.
The couple said their mutual friends set them up for a blind date and they had to cancel several planned first meetings over the course of a year until their pals intervened to make the date happen.
"Our two friends, my friend Alex, and her friend Bert, finally said, 'Enough, you two are going to meet,'" recalled Laign.
"I remember just walking up and she's just beautiful, and she took my breath away, and she still does," she further added of their first date.
The 'GMA' anchor chimed in sharing that their mutual friend was entrusted with a secret code to determine the date's outcome.
"Within a few minutes [of the date], I was kicking my friend Bert under the table. And we asked if they would like to stay for dinner, and her friend couldn't stay, but she did," said Roberts.
Where do Robin Roberts and Amber Laign live?
Roberts and Laign currently live in Connecticut. The couple who have mostly stayed away from the public eye showed glimpses of their space on Instagram.
During the outbreak of Covid-19, Roberts also co-hosted 'Good Morning America' from her home.
In 2005, the television host had officially moved from ESPN to the 'GMA' anchor desk at the time of their first date.
This move helped them both with the opportunity to meet daily at the beginning of their relationship.
At the time, Laign who is a massage therapist said that she never watched 'GMA' and did not follow sports coverage and she had to Google Roberts to familiarize herself with her work and to learn more about her.
Laign shared that she eventually began altering her daily route to pass through Times Square, where 'GMA' goes live each day.
"I'd cut through Times Square and Sam [Champion] would be doing the weather. And when Sam would do the weather, Robin would walk over to the windows and she'd wave and we would time it," she recalled.
"It just put a little extra pep in my step. I don't know how we finally got the timing down, but that went on for quite a while," said Laign.
The anchor also recalled how she waited each morning to wave to Laign. "I do remember looking forward to that time in the morning when she would walk by and I could just go, I'd just run [to the window]," said Roberts.
Robin Roberts and Amber Laign's cancer diagnosis
The couple have been supportive of each other when they both suffered life-threatening illnesses.
In 2007, the veteran broadcaster opened up about her breast cancer diagnosis and five years later, she was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome, a rare blood and bone marrow disease.
Laign was also diagnosed with breast cancer in 2021. "She and I have been together almost 17 years and have helped each other through our challenges like my journey with cancer," Roberts stated in February 2022.
"It's my turn now to be there for her like she was for me. And that means I'll be away from 'GMA' from time to time like this morning as she starts chemo" she explained in a video posted on Twitter.
