LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Charlize Theron has refuted any claims that she has undergone a facelift to maintain a youthful appearance, instead humorously stating, "I'm simply getting older, this is a natural process."
In celebration of twenty years as the face of Dior's popular fragrance J'Adore, the 48-year-old actress discussed beauty and aging.
Reflecting on her iconic photographs, she commented on the evolution of her looks in a recent interview.
Charlize Theron embraces natural aging amid facelift speculations
Theron shared her appreciation for the changes in her face over time, stating, "I am just aging, this is just what happens."
However, she acknowledged that people have speculated about her having had a facelift.
She responded to such speculations with a candid retort, asserting that the changes in her face aren't a sign of "bad plastic surgery" but rather of aging naturally.
"My face is changing, and I love that my face is changing and aging," she told Allure magazine. "But people think I had a facelift," she added.
The actress, known for her role in 'Young Adult', also expressed her displeasure with the double standards around aging between men and women.
"They're like, "What did she do to her face?" I'm like, "B***h, I'm just aging! It doesn't mean I got bad plastic surgery. This is just what happens."'
She expressed her dislike for how women over a certain age are expected to get work done. But at the same time, she advocated for women to have the autonomy to age in a way that feels right to them.
Theron, originally from South Africa, advocated for empathy and understanding in everyone's individual journeys.
"I despise that concept and I want to fight against it, but I also think women want to age in a way that feels right to them," the South African native mused.
"I think we need to be a little bit more empathetic to how we all go through our journey," she explained.
"My journey of having to see my face on a billboard is quite funny now," she joked.
Charlize Theron's daughter had hilarious reaction to Dior billboard
Discussing her experience seeing her own face on billboards, Theron jokingly shared how her daughter reacted when they saw one of her larger-than-life J'Adore ads.
"My oldest was just so embarrassed. She's like, "Oh, my God, Mom! You're not even wearing a shirt." I was like, "You're right. I didn't even realize,"' the 'Fast X' star actress said.
"She's like, "All my friends are gonna see this. I mean, can you just wear a shirt?"' Theron said, recalling the incident.
Charlize Theron is turning down roles requiring drastic physical transformations
Theron also touched on the types of roles she now avoids due to her age. She explained that she won't take on roles that require drastic weight changes, recalling her experiences gaining and losing weight for previous roles.
"I will never, ever do a movie again and say, "Yeah, I'll gain 40 pounds."
"I will never do it again because you can't take it off," she said.
"When I was 27, I did Monster, I lost 30 pounds, like, overnight. I missed three meals and I was back to my normal weight," she explained.
"Then I did it at 43 for Tully and I remember a year into trying to lose the weight, I called my doctor and I said, 'I think I'm dying because I cannot lose this weight.'"
"And he was like, 'You're over 40. Calm down. Your metabolism is not what it was.' Nobody wants to hear that," she said.
In preparation for her role as an exhausted mother of three in the 2018 film 'Tully', the actress gained 50 pounds.
Theron had previously disclosed that the weight gain for the role had a negative impact on her mental state. She opened up about adopting a high-calorie diet and altering her lifestyle, recounting instances of indulging in mac and cheese at 2 am.
Theron explained that she aimed to understand the character's emotions by physically experiencing them, although the outcome was unexpected.
The weight gain led to a significant bout of depression, a sensation she had not encountered before.
Her diet included excessively processed foods and sugar intake, which affected her mood on set as well.
Theron described the challenging regimen she followed to maintain the gained weight. She recounted how she needed to eat constantly, even consuming In-N-Out burgers and milkshakes for breakfast.
While the initial weeks were enjoyable, she expressed how the excitement dwindled, and consuming such quantities became a chore.
Theron shared that she had food within arm's reach for midnight snacks, including cold macaroni and cheese. She even resorted to setting alarms during the night to ensure she ate enough to sustain the weight.
