Who is Renate Krößner? The actress celebrated in today's Google Doodle
Head to the Google homepage today and you’ll see a flame-haired woman gazing into the distance. The Doodle was created in honour of German actress Renate Krößner, who would have turned 78 today. Krößner was propelled to international stardom after playing the titular role in Solo Sunny – a 1980 East German film about a rebellious singer, which struck a chord with audiences around the world. Her performance was met with universal critical acclaim, earning her the Best Actress Silver Bear award at the Berlin International Film Festival — the first for an East German production. Sign up for our free Indy100 weekly newsletter For the uninitiated, Germany was split into East and West from 1945-1990: the western bloc was led by the US and the eastern bloc by the USSR, and life on the two sides couldn’t have been more different. The West was a liberal democracy, while the East was essentially a communist state. Permission had to be granted to anyone who wished to leave the socialist territory, which Krößner obtained in 1985. After moving to West Berlin, Krößner became a mainstay on hit West German TV shows and continued to wow film critics, racking up a number of prestigious accolades including an RTL Golden Lion. In 1991, Krößner was a jury member at the 41st Berlin International Film Festivaland she continued acting into the 2000s. She died following a short illness on 25 May, 2020 at the age of 75. But, as today’s Google Doogle proves, her legacy lives on. Have your say in our news democracy. Click the upvote icon at the top of the page to help raise this article through the indy100 rankings.

Director of controversial Jennifer Lawrence Netflix movie responds to criticism
The director of the controversial Jennifer Lawrence comedy No Hard Feelings has addressed the criticism aimed at the film, and given a pretty clear response. Gene Stupnitsky has spoken about the age gap between the two main characters, which has attracted some backlash on social media. The sex comedy movie was released earlier this year and has now found a new audience after landing on Netflix. The film focuses on Lawrence's character Maddie who discovers a lucrative job for the summer; dating an introverted 19-year-old, Percy – played by Andrew Barth Feldman, before he goes to college. Social media users have criticised the age gap between the characters – but Stupnitsky shut down the backlash in a series of interviews. The filmmaker spoke about another of Lawrence’s movies, Silver Linings Playbook, which features a similar age gap between the characters played by Lawrence and Bradley Cooper. Speaking at the film premiere in New York, Stupnitsky said: “It goes the other way too. We took great pains to be careful about the ick factor because it could go that way... We took a humanist approach and I think that's all you can ask for." Feldman also spoke during an interview with Vanity Fair, saying: "Because what is a comedy if it’s not at least a little controversial?" He added: "But Percy is an adult. I am an adult, and this is a cringe comedy. It should make you uncomfortable. I’m disinterested in a movie, and specifically a comedy, about people who are perfect and make the right decisions all the time.” He went on to say: "[We were so thoughtful about it throughout. Constantly, every day talking about what it meant and how it would manifest in a truthful way. "And I think people are going to be surprised with not just how funny it turns out to be, and how uncomfortable it maybe makes them, but also how beautiful this relationship is and how heartfelt it is." It comes after Lawrence has left viewers of her new film No Hard Feelings stunned by a fight scene on a beach in the new film where the Oscar-winning Hollywood A-lister is completely naked. Neil Gaiman shares 'heartbreaking' Sinead O'Connor coincidence hours before her death
Neil Gaiman shares 'heartbreaking' Sinead O'Connor coincidence hours before her death
Sinead O’Connor’s death at age 56 this week has led to an outpouring of grief from both celebrities and normal people whose lives the iconic singer touched. Neil Gaiman, the English novelist, is the latest, having shared a coincidence that occurred hours before O’Connor’s death was announced. Gaiman was at the Golden Notebook bookshop in Woodstock, New York, the writer said, where employees gave him a signed copy of Why Sinead O’Connor Matters by the journalist Allyson McCabe. Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter He said he did not personally select the book, but “[t]hey chose it for me.” That same day, on 26 July, O’Connor’s passing was announced publicly. The synopsis of McCabe’s book is as follows: “In 1990, Sinéad O’Connor’s video for “Nothing Compares 2 U” turned her into a superstar. “Two years later, an appearance on Saturday Night Live turned her into a scandal. For many people — including, for years, the author — what they knew of O’Connor stopped there. “Allyson McCabe believes it’s time to reassess our old judgments about Sinéad O’Connor and to expose the machinery that built her up and knocked her down.” Gaiman's fans have responded to the unusual coincidence in their droves. Why Sinead O’Connor Matters was published in May 2023. Have your say in our news democracy. Click the upvote icon at the top of the page to help raise this article through the indy100 rankings.

Meghan Markle looks set for another Netflix record with new movie adaptation
Meghan Markle could be set to have another huge Netflix hit on her hands as her and Prince Harry look to adapt the best-selling rom-com novel Meet Me at the Lake for the streaming service. Carley Fortune, the author of the book confirmed the news that Netflix and Meghan and Harry's production company Archewall would be working on the forthcoming film. On Instagram, she wrote: "I never thought I'd be making this announcement, but since I am, it feels fitting that I'm doing it from the cottage where it all began." Sign up to our free Indy100 weekly newsletter "I'm thrilled to confirm that I'm teaming up with Netflix and Archewall productions on the adaptation of Meet Me at the Lake," she continued. "Will and Fern's love story is dear to my heart, and I can't imagine a more perfect partnership. Writing this book was a tremendous personal challenge, and to see it recognized in this way is truly incredible." The book focuses on the relationship between central characters Will and Fern who meet in their 30s and features similar instances to what have befell Harry and Meghan in their lives childhoods, including the death of a parent in a car crash and postpartum struggles. Once the film arrives on the platform it could set another Netflix record for the Royal couple. The story is set in Toronto which is where Meghan was filming the drama Suits when she first met Harry in 2016. Suits also ties into Meghan's relationship with Netflix as the legal show recently set an unprecedented record on the platform after it was made available in the United States. Even though the show ended four years ago it is now the most streamed acquired show in Netflix history having racked up 3.1 billion minutes in just a week. Meghan played the paralegal Rachel Zane in the show but left in 2017 following her engagement to Harry. In addition, the couple's Harry and Meghan documentary which was released in December 2022 is the most streamed documentary in Netflix history which was watched for 81.55 million hours within its first week.
