Tina Turner’s final words to Angela Bassett revealed in ‘beautiful’ tribute to rock 'n' roll singer
Actor Angela Bassett, who played Tina Turner in the 1993 biopic What’s Love Got to Do With It, has shared an emotional tribute to the 'Proud Mary' singer following her death at the age of 83. Official social media channels for Turner, who was also known for the hit 'The Best', shared the news on Wednesday evening (May 25), remembering her “boundless passion for life” which “enchanted fans worldwide and inspired future stars”. A statement from a representative confirmed the singer “died peacefully” at her home in Switzerland “after a long illness”. Tributes soon flooded in honouring the musician, with stars such as Mick Jagger, Beyoncé and Diana Ross paying their respects. In Bassett’s tribute to Turner – born Anna Mae Bullock – on Instagram, the Golden Globe-winning actor said farewell to “a woman who owned her pain and trauma and used it as a means to help change the world”. She continued: “Through her courage in telling her story, her commitment to stay the course in life, no matter the sacrifice, and her determination to carve out a space in rock and roll for herself and others who look like her, Tina Turner showed others who lived in fear what a beautiful future filled with love, compassion and freedom should look like. Instead, you reached deep into your soul, found your inner Tina, and showed her to the world.’ “I shall hold these words close to my heart for the rest of my days. I am honoured to have known Tina Turner. I am humbled to have helped show her to the world. “So on today, while we mourn the loss of this iconic voice and presence, she gave us more than we could have ever asked. She gave us her whole self. “And Tina Turner is a gift that that will always be "simply the best." Angels sing thee to thy rest…Queen.” Others commended Bassett for her words, with fellow actor Amirah Vann saying the tribute was “beautiful”. Another wrote: “You made me forget there was someone else on screen. You two were born to cross paths and I’m glad we had you to honour her.” “Beautifully put and powerfully portrayed. There will never be another like her,” commented The Princess Bride actor Cary Elwes. Elsewhere, Turner’s final interview before her passing – to The Guardian as part of its Q&A column – has resurfaced in which she revealed how she would like to be remembered. “As the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll. As a woman who showed other women that it is OK to strive for success on their own terms,” she said. Have your say in our news democracy. Referee in viral Mark Zuckerberg jui-jitsu 'argument' video confirms what happened
Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg surprised people recently after turning up at a jui-jitsu tournament, with footage appearing to show him looking a little unhappy with the result of his bout. The Meta CEO was spotted taking on a fellow competitor in Redwood City in California on Saturday (May 6), and he was eventually pinned after a tussle in the ring. The referee stopped the fight and awarded it to his opponent after believing that Zuckerberg had 'tapped out'. However, the footage suggested Zuckerberg was unhappy with the result and it was changed to a 0-0 draw. Sign up to our new free Indy100 weekly newsletter He did well during the result of the tournament, with the 38-year-old winning gold and silver medals at his first public competition. Now, the referee from the event has spoken and clarified that there was no such “argument”. Referee Lucas Costa, who is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, spoke to bloodyelbow.com and explained what went down. “There was no argument,” said Costa. “It was in Gi and he got choked out. That was the video you saw. I stopped it and he wanted to check with me about why I stopped it. He didn’t know what was happening, which was one of the reasons I stopped it. But he had started to snore and the rule set says that snoring is a version of a verbal tap.” “I was paying a lot of attention,” Costa added. “I was paying even more attention because it was Mark. He got caught in an Ezekiel and I waited, but he didn’t fight back. And I was waiting, but on the third snore I had to stop the fight. He was very polite but he wanted to know how the rules work.” Speaking about the experience of meeting him, Costa said: “Mark’s fight was a surprise… I was impressed though. “He seemed like a normal guy. Looked me in the eye, gave me a firm handshake and an even bigger surprise was that he fights well.” Discussing his fighting style, Costa added: “He goes forward a lot. He attacks more. With very little defence.” Have your say in our news democracy. Click the upvote icon at the top of the page to help raise this article through the indy100 rankings.

Jeremy Vine's latest on-air gaffe is textbook Alan Partridge
Radio presenter Jeremy Vine has given listeners perhaps the most quintessentially “Alan Partridge” moment when reading out a surprisingly morbid story on his BBC Radio 2 show. Vine, 58, was telling a tale about an eight-year-old who was boating with their family on the River Hull live on his show. While reading up to the point when the writer’s 12-year-old brother took control of the boat and drove it into a bridge, he started laughing. “I don’t know why I’m laughing,” he said. The contents of the letter, however, were about to get extremely dark. Vine, reading out the story, said: "When I was eight, my parents had a boat on the River Hull, one day it rained and the river rose, my parents let my 12-year-old brother drive the boat. “We were sunbathing on deck, I went to get a drink just as the galley caved in, because what he'd done is accelerated..." Chuckling, Vine continued: "...into Tickton Bridge... I don't know why I'm laughing....okay, this is not good. "The collision took my mum's arm off...blimey O'Riley... I didn't see that coming.” The listener wrote that they would have been "decapitated" if they had still been on the boat's deck. Jeremy ended with: "Okay...well that's slightly lowered the mood." Sharing the post on social media, one listener said: “Purest Alan Partridge moment from Vine, here. Gold.” Vine responded: "I can only apologise." Oops.
