LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: ‘Today’ correspondent and well-known journalist Tom Costello amazed his co-stars and viewers after giving a live, on-air report surrounded by sharks underwater. The journalist was in an underwater cage and surrounded by sharks as he spoke to his colleagues in New York City.
On Wednesday, June 14, 2023, broadcast of ‘Today’, the show’s Costello, also known as Thomas Eugene Costello, reported live from the Georgia Aquarium to conduct his segment. He wore waterproof headphones to talk to his co-hosts Hoda Kotb, Craig Melvin, Al Roker, Savannah Guthrie, and Carson Daly who were on set in New York City. While he stunned everyone with this dangerous mission, Kotd insisted the TV personality was “brave” for taking on such an appalling assignment.
Tom Costello’s fish story
During a recent segment, Costello was live from the Georgia Aquarium where he reportedly went underwater for his broadcast. He spoke about the importance of sharks in the ocean. The clip shared on the screen showed the contributor and an ocean life expert submerging underwater in a case surrounded by sharks. When the taped segment ended, Costello went on to share more information as he again went underwater live. He disclosed that a tiger shark had been “circling” around him for about 20 minutes and that “they eat everything”. He teased about life being a TV news correspondent, “Everybody needs a fish story, and this is mine”.
While the ‘Today’ show hosts all appeared on the segment and sat on the couch in New York City set, they talked to Costello who could hear them through a waterproof headphone. Melvin jokingly teased Costello and said, “Wonder who they’re using as bait,” Guthrie quickly replied teasing Costello, “Tom!”
‘You trying to get rid of me?’
Meanwhile, on Tuesday’s broadcast, Guthrie had a playful tease on-air with colleague Melvin as she mocked him for trying to “get rid of her”. Guthrie recently came back from her Paris assignment and geared right back to her duties. While the duo alongside Kotb discussed the looming retirement of longtime ‘Wheel of Fortune’ host Pat Sajak, they deliberated about who will take over as the new host. Melvin shared his thoughts that Sajak’s 28-year-old daughter Maggie Sajak works on the show and even filled for Sajak’s co-host Vanna White in one of the episodes. Kotb replied, “That would be interesting,” to which Melvin responded, “Yes! Keep it in the family.”
Also, there were discussions about introducing a new celebrity host, similar to Mayim Bialik's position on ‘Jeopardy!’. Melvin suggested, “Savannah Guthrie’s available!” to which Guthrie shockingly replied, “You trying to get rid of me?"
