HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA: Andy Cohen clarified about comments claiming he is "in love" with his friend John Mayer after he told Howard Stern that they are (platonically) in love. The television host said his statement was made "flippantly and off-handedly."
Cohen shared that he was upset by the media frenzy over his comment and declared that the two are dating. "It became headline news. And the more it became headline news, the more butthurt I got over it," the 55-year-old said on Radio Andy on Thursday, June 22. "You know why? Are two men not allowed to say that they're in love? Are we all so flipped out?", he asked.
'It felt very pure and real'
Responding to co-host John Hill teasing that the 'Bravo' host actually loved being associated with the singer, Cohen said he finds the whole matter "weird." The television personality then talked about his college roommate Dave Ansel and said he was "the first guy I was ever in love with."
"I was stunned, by the way, in like, week one of freshman year when he said, 'Oh my God, I love you, dude. I love you,'" Cohen recalled. "And I was like, 'Wow, this is a totally hetero guy expressing his love for me.' And it felt very pure and real, but not sexual whatsoever. It was grounded in our friendship," he said.
"That's why I just think that a friendship of two guys, that doesn't seem like headline news to me… Yes, I offhandedly said we love each other. And then the longer it went I was like, 'Y'all need to kind of get ahold of yourself'," Cohen continued.
'I love Andy more than I can tell you'
During his appearance on SiriusXM's 'The Howard Stern Show' last week, Cohen was asked if he loved Mayer. The Bravo host who is openly gay said he is in love with the songwriter but swore on his children Lucy, 13 months, and Benjamin, four, that he never had a sexual relationship with Mayer who is straight. This comment made headlines speculating about their dating life.
After the duo took the stage with Dead & Company at Citi Field on Thursday night in New York City. After the concert, Cohen took to his Instagram Story to share a video of the show and wrote, "Was an incredible show!!!!! Wowowowow." He then shared a photo of Mayer with Bob Weir on stage. "Thank you, for a real good time," Cohen wrote.
In February 2022 during Cohen’s Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony, Mayer talked about the television host. "He's a Madonna stan and a Deadhead. He's an A-lister, who parties like a B-lister, with the free spirit of a C-lister," he told the audience.
"I love Andy more than I can tell you. He's a brilliant human being, a hilarious cohort, a loving son and brother — and more recently he's become a proud, engaged, and deeply devoted father," Mayer said, reported People.
